Consumption & Production Sustainability

I was selected as one of 12 chosen artists from across the UAE to depict the SDGs of the United Nations. Consumption and production have a chicken and egg relationship. Everybody is trying to milk this cow , and trying to shift the responsibility to the other side. However intelligent decision makers must emerge now , sooner than later and put its reigns around this untamed horse if we want life to be sustainable on this planet ,that we call home.

Nature is demanding us to make intelligent and responsible choices, to keep things going. Controlling our consumption and hence the production is the only way forward . The clock is ticking, we must keep a check on our usage of natural resources, the waste that we are creating and the way we are interfering with nature for short term benefits .

To depict this concept through art, I have chosen the honey bee as a symbol of life. Honey bee is a symbol of human sustenance, as without it, the human ecosystem is also expected to collapse and perish . The honey comb in the background is symbolizing the system that nature has created for us to thrive upon. If we follow the laws/rules/ manual as defined by nature, we will flourish, else we are bound to face doom. The hourglass symbolizes the time that we are running out of, by the passing moment. The symbol of sustainability is what’s passing through the hour glass. It is the biggest challenge that we are faced with today, as The imbalance created by humans’ unintelligent decisions is affecting the equilibrium and is leading us towards collapsing the entire system .

Honey bee symbolizes us and our existence on this planet. We must create a bottle neck , to keep a check on our consumption and hence out production. Develop authorities that may ensure that the productions are kept within a check, spread awareness about reducing consumption and about responsible waste disposal and much more. We must combine our strength and efforts to ensure a steady and sustainable future to our next generation. The clock is ticking , so it’s now or never ! !
